The ITF is building a democratic, representative union of fishers in Thailand, campaigning to improve the wages, working conditions and labour rights of all fishers in the Thai fishing industry. Thailand’s fishing industry has become one of the world’s largest worth US$5.8 billion in 2017. The Thai government reacted to international scrutiny with an overhaul of the industry and strengthened their national laws and increased fines, but the majority of fishers in Thailand are still vulnerable to abuse and exploitation as labour and human rights abuses remain ingrained as regulation is being skirted or not enforced.
Without enforceable rights at the workplace and the strength that comes from being represented by a union, labour right violations and the mistreatment of fishers will persist in Thailand.
