No Backsliding on ILO C188! Joint Statement Condemns Proposed Thai Fishing Industry Rollbacks

October 20, 2023

On October 15th, the Fishers Rights Network and 83 other organizations signed a joint statement to the new Prime Minister of Thailand voicing concerns about rumored rollbacks of policies governing the Thai Fishing Industry. Fishers in Thailand continue to face extreme labor abuse and exploitation, and any relaxation of current policies will be dangerous for the industry. Thailand ratified ILO Convention 188 (the Work in Fishing Convention) in 2019, and the proposed reforms would most likely undermine existing policies and further erode confidence in seafood products from Thailand, especially for large seafood markets.
