Indonesia commits to ratify ILO Convention 188

May 1, 2026

Indonesia has committed to ratifying ILO Convention 188 – the Work in Fishing Convention – and fisher unions made it happen.

The ITF Fishers Rights Network celebrates this May Day victory, in direct response to calls from Indonesian and Southeast Asian fishers and their unions demanding real health and safety protections and enforceable workplace rights.

The fishing industry kills thousands of workers every year – preventable deaths aided by weak enforcement and monitoring.

That must end. Fisher trade unions are not just partners in this fight, they are essential to ensure better industry standards and better wages, working conditions and protections for fishers.

We are cautiously optimistic that today’s action can pave the way to real, lasting improvements for Indonesian fishers at home and on vessels around the world.

Solidarity with Indonesian fishers. ✊🐟
